Find Middlesex County Residents Directory

Middlesex County is the most populous county in Massachusetts with more than 1.6 million people spread across 54 communities. The Middlesex County residents directory draws from street lists, voter rolls, and registry of deeds data kept by local clerks and state offices. Each town in the county must run an annual census under state law, which feeds into the residents directory and makes it one of the most complete in the state. You can search these records by name, address, or town to find current and past residents of Middlesex County. Both the north and south registry districts hold property records that tie into directory lookups.

Middlesex County Registry Records

Middlesex County splits its registry of deeds into two districts. The north district sits in Lowell. The south district is in Cambridge. Both hold land and property records that go back centuries. These registries are a key part of any residents directory search because they link people to addresses and parcels across all 54 towns. If you need to find where someone lives or has lived, the deeds index is a good place to start.

The Middlesex North Registry of Deeds covers ten communities: Billerica, Carlisle, Chelmsford, Dracut, Dunstable, Lowell, Tewksbury, Tyngsborough, Westford, and Wilmington. This office has scanned all records from 1629 to the present day and put them online for free. You can search and download documents at no cost through the Mass Land Records portal. The office also runs a Consumer Notification Service that sends free fraud alerts when a document gets filed with your name on it.

The lead-in to the Middlesex North Registry can be seen on their official search portal.

Massachusetts is the only state that requires an annual census of all residents. Under M.G.L. c. 51 §4, every city and town must count its residents each year. All 54 communities in Middlesex County take part. This census creates the most up-to-date residents directory data in the county.

The annual census produces street lists. These lists show names and addresses for each household in a town. Under M.G.L. c. 51 §6, street lists are public records. Anyone can get a copy. Most towns charge between $15 and $25 for a printed street list. Some post them on the town clerk's website at no cost. The street list is the backbone of the Middlesex County residents directory.

Census takers go door to door or send forms by mail. Residents fill in names, dates of birth, citizenship status, and other basic facts. The town clerk compiles this data into the street list and the annual register. If a person does not respond, they may be dropped from the voter rolls. That makes the census important for more than just the directory.

Note: Street lists from prior years are often kept at town halls and public libraries, giving you a way to trace where someone lived in past years.

Voter lists are free in Massachusetts. Any registered voter can get a copy of the voter list for their city or town. These lists show names, addresses, party enrollment, and voting history. Juror lists are also public under M.G.L. c. 234A §15 and provide yet another source for directory information.

The Board of Registration maintains records for doctors, lawyers, nurses, plumbers, electricians, and many other licensed professionals. These records are public and show the person's name and town. Combined with the registry of deeds, annual census, and voter rolls, these sources create a broad residents directory for Middlesex County that covers most adults in the area.
